“My favorite thing about HUABJ is that we have the ability to polish our skills and be as creative as possible. Personally I had the opportunity to practice my writing skills about a live radio broadcast from one of my favorite stations and showcase that piece of writing on the club HUABJ’s official newsletter, “Black Ink”. Now, I can Google my name and see my work.

“Also, as the Event Coordinator, I have the ability to bring industry professionals to the Hofstra campus, learn some useful knowledge that I otherwise would not have known about the industry, and build my professional network in the process.”

HofstraUABJ should be the NABJ Student Chapter of the Year because:

“This has been a very successful year for us. For starters, we have been recognized as an official chapter. In addition to that, we are consistently building the club and making it as beneficial as possible for all members. Our president has set up club trips to media companies in NYC, in which members get exclusive tours at establishments and build personal relationships with employers. Also, we have created a web series, which is another platform for members to polish their skills, in front of the camera or behind, and create a demo reel for when they apply for jobs.”

“My favorite thing about HUAB is that we always have fun together while learning about our craft and getting ready for our future careers.”

HofstraUABJ should be the NABJ Student Chapter of the Year because:

“We have come together over the past year and a half to learn more about what it means to be journalists. We have had guest speakers such as NY1 News Anchor Cheryl Wills, National Poet Joshua Bennett and others, speak to us and that has been so beneficial to NABJ and the Hofstra community because we are spreading awareness about what NABJ has to offer to students. Also, we have taken trips to places such as the Newseum in Washington D.C. and NY1 News Studio. Being in the Hofstra University’s Association of Black Journalists, teaches us that if we work hard and constantly improve on our craft then we can make our dreams come true and make a difference in the world of journalism. We only continue to get bigger and better.”

“My favorite thing about HUABJ is that we have the ability to improve our own skills and help someone else improve theirs”

HofstraUABJ should be the NABJ Student Chapter of the Year because:

“Hofstra University’s Association of Black Journalists has offered me a chance to be a leader and a mentor. Two years ago, when this club started there was just three of us. I couldn’t have dreamed that just two years later we would be where we are, the largest African-American pre-professional organization of Hofstra’s campus and one of the top two minority led clubs.

“HUABJ, is not just a communications club. We’re also a member of the community, hosting events with other Hofstra clubs. Not many clubs on campus handle both qualifications well, HUABJ has.

“Also HUABJ, has given me the experience to be a productive member in the newsroom. I have been a Graphic Designer, creating logos for the club’s name and for t-shirts. I have been an Event Planner, scheduling meetings, resume workshops, events, and recruiting speakers. I have been a Radio Personality, hosting our bi-weekly podcast, “Rock the Mic”. I have been the producer and anchor for our bi-weekly web series, “BlackInkTV”; the writer for “BlackInk”. Essentially, HUABJ has given me every opportunity to be anything I wanted to in the realm of communications.

“Furthermore, and most importantly, HUABJ has given me the chance to be a leader, mentor, and family to a group of young girls and young men, which I never would have had to chance to do without it.

“Concluding, The Hofstra University’s Association of Black Journalists deserves to be the National Association of Black Journalists Student Chapter of the year because it echoes the principles of the mother chapter, to include all realms of journalism, and advocate on behalf of black journalists.”

HofstraUABJ should be the NABJ Student Chapter of the Year because:

“The students are extremely dedicated to the club.  Along with our publications, events, and meetings, we work with each other to make sure we are all doing our best.  We share scholarship and internship information and applications.  We also take trips into the city, visiting various news stations. I feel being a part of HUABJ can really help enhance your journalism experience at Hofstra.  You get experience in the journalism field whether it is writing & editing, shooting video, and using online and social media.  We also meet and network with journalism professionals which can be helpful to the success of HUABJ members.”
